Sql Server Restore Database Access Denied ValidTargetForCreation Error

You attempt to restore a database, the restore fails and you get a SQL Server Access Denied ValidTargetForCreation error.

Open the SQL Server Configuration Manager, navigate to the service running your SQL Server database engine and check the account running your service (Log On As).   Make sure this account has permissions to write to your SQL Server data directory (The data directories will be available for viewing in the Files tab of the Restore database screen in SQL Management Studio).

If this is a local developer instance or you don’t have any production responsibilities you could always switch the account back to Local System in the SQL Server Configuration Manager – then retry the restore.
